Psoriasis Q & A

What is Psoriasis?

Psoriasis is an autoimmune system disorder that causes excess skin cells to build up on the surface of the skin. This leaves psoriasis sufferers with scaly, rough patches of skin. The disorder affects everyone differently. Some people only have occasional psoriasis flares while others deal with the skin symptoms continually.

Who is Likely to Suffer From Psoriasis?

Psoriasis can happen in people of any age or sex. It is more common in people between age 10 and 30.

Will Psoriasis Resolve on its Own?

It is possible that psoriasis will clear up for a long period of time, even years, but it does tend to return at some point. People who suffer from psoriasis need to be proactive about their treatment to reduce and prevent flares now and in the future.

How is Psoriasis Treated?

There are a variety of treatments for psoriasis today. In the past, the main approach to the treatment of psoriasis has been topical, using corticosteroid creams. Topical retinoids and vitamin D creams may also be used for psoriasis. While these approaches can be successful, the Xtrac Laser has shown tremendous results for Dermatology of Boca patients. The Xtrac laser uses single wavelength light to target psoriasis patches. Over time (usually 10 or less short sessions) the psoriasis will dramatically clear up. Patients can expect to go at least several months without further flares once their psoriasis has been cleared. Most people feel no pain at all during Xtrac Laser treatment, although a mild warming sensation may occur. Many patients love this psoriasis solution because it allows them to get rid of messy creams and complicated daily treatment regimens for psoriasis.

Is it True That Sun Helps With Psoriasis?

For some patients, sun exposure may be beneficial in dealing with psoriasis. Even ultraviolet light via sun lamp may be useful in psoriasis treatment. However, it is important that the patient weighs the drawbacks of sun exposure against the benefits.
